This is a wonderful Folkstreams documentary about Elizabeth Proper, a basket maker from the Taconic hills in eastern New York State. She made baskets from her own harvested white oak.

I have been meaning to post images of this small cedar basket I bought this summer on Cortes Island, made by Doreen Guthrie, who strips and prepares the cedar herself from trees on the island. I love it’s shape.

And a friend collected mountain goat hair for me while camping in Northern BC. It’s unbelievably soft.

When I was in Vermont we took a day trip to the Enfield Shaker Museum, where we not only toured the buildings but hiked to their spiritual feasting grounds. I found an amazing book on Shaker baskets there and now have a small basket-making obsession happening, resulting in this somewhat crude but all together satisfying Shaker cheese basket I made the other evening. It is now watched over by a new Polish wooden bird that I was given as a gift from Krakow.
